A 40-year-old caver from Cincinnati is dead after falling while climbing out of a cave near the Kentucky-Tennessee line.

The chief deputy coroner of Pulaski County says Edward Martin was the last in a group making their way out of a cave near Burnside, Kentucky, shortly before sunset Saturday when he fell 30 feet to his death. Burnside is about 30 miles north of the Big South Fork National Scenic River and Recreation Area.

Jim McWhorter says Martin and the others entered the cave at mid-afternoon, explored part of it and decided to leave. He says the group split up because some considered the exit too dangerous.

McWhorter says three cavers ahead of Martin made it out safely, but Martin slipped and fell, striking rocks on his way down.

The deputy coroner says Martin had been caving for a dozen years.
