Hi all!
Just a last minute notice to encourage everyone to attend the SWR
Winter Tech this weekend. We have a fantastic program and a great
party planned for you.
If you haven’t done so already, you might want to call or e-mail
one of the people below for accommodations:
Don Martin - 1718 Regal Ridge, 575-522-4958, dmartin at zianet.com -
floor space only (fairly near to NMSU)
Bob Rodgers - 5472 Amarillo del Sol, 575-382-8611,
motocaver at comcast.net - several beds & floor space (north of Las Cruces)
Allen Wright - 528 N. Melendres, 575-496-6705, sizige at hotmail.com -
beds & floor space (party location - across town from NMSU)
Each of the above still has room for additional cavers.
The SWR meeting and technical program will occur on Saturday in Room
96 at the Doña Ana Branch of NMSU. I’ve attached two maps, the
first will get you to the Doña Ana Branch campus. The second will
get you from the parking lot to the meeting room. The program begins
on Saturday with registration, burritos and coffee from 8 - 9 am.
(There will be a donation can for these items.) We will have a sign
up sheet for the dinner and party ($8 charge) There will also be
signup sheets for the Sunday field trips.
The SWR business meeting will begin promptly at 9 am and the
sessions will start around 10:15 am. We will break at around 11:50
for lunch (on your own - there are many possibilities nearby) and
resume at 1 pm sharp. We should be done with the sessions at about 5
pm. We have a full program for the technical presentations featuring
exploration updates, reports on digs, geology, biology, hydrology,
cave lighting advances and more, i.e. something for everyone.
Then we are heading to Allen Wright’s house for the dinner and
party. The program will have directions to his house. The dinner
will be at 6 pm and will be Mexican fare prepared by one of
Mesilla’s finest restaurants (Andele’s) We will also provide
alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Allen has a brand new hot tub
so you might want to bring your swim suit so that you can catch a soak.
On Sunday, we will offer two field trips for those who are interested.
The first, led by Allen, will go to Aden Fumarole. Aden Fumarole is
a 100’ vertical drop into a volcanic vent, where, in 1928, bones
from a giant ground sloth were found. These bones are now on display
in the Smithsonian Institute museum. The drive out to Aden Fumarole
is about 1 hour and is suitable for pickups or SUVs. Even those who
choose not to do the drop may find the area of the Aden lava flow
interesting.
The second trip to McKinney’s Hole, led by me, features a
significant cave formed at a quartzite/limestone contact. The cave
consists of one large entrance room with several small passages/
chambers off of this room. It is a short ~1/4 mile hike from
vehicles to the cave and the cave requires no vertical gear - it is
all walking. There is evidence of prehistoric use of the cave. The
drive to McKinney’s Hole is about 1.5 hours and is suitable for any
vehicle. It is located near Lake Valley, NM, which makes it a very
easy side trip for those heading North or West to get home.
Comments on the attachment maps:
The first map shows the location of the Doña Ana Branch campus on
the NMSU campus in the southern part of Las Cruces. You’ll note
that I-10 is on the left side of the map and I-25 is on the right.
The major street that connects these two in this area is University
Avenue, which forms the northern boundary of NMSU. Anyone coming in
on the Interstates will take the University exit (142 on I-10, 1 on
I-25) and proceed on University to El Paseo Road then turn south and
go around the bend (it becomes Union Ave.) and turn left on Sam Steel
Way. This takes you right past the Doña Ana Branch campus. The red
triangle on the map shows the approximate location of Aaron
Stockton’s apartment. His is the only caver’s place that is on
this map. Everyone else lives off the map to the north. People who
are staying with Bob Rodgers will come down I-25. People staying
with Allen Wright will likely come down El Paseo Rd. People staying
with Don Martin or myself will come in on University Avenue from the
right.
Please contact the person you are staying with for directions to
their house.
The second map shows the route from the parking lot to the room we
will be using.
