Mark,

I suggest converting graphical images to PNG, rather than GIF.  It
gives a smaller file size as output, among other advantages (it allows
scalable transparent attributes).

A tool I recommend for converting file types, cropping, texturing,
among many other things is a piece of software called GraphicsMagick.
It uses a command line, but it is very straightforward to use.
