Riding the top of the elevator and using the hand control to increase 
the rate from an inspection speed of 50' or so a minute to the full 800' 
per minute is an experience not to refuse, but very hard to come by. A 
most impressive ride, as is the 3000 lb counterweight zooming by like a 
guillotine as you ascend the shaft. Of course, the only thing to hold 
onto is the hoist cable.
