Kurt, be both and have fun at it......and of course, never trust  
those in authority. Motorized ascenders/the idea of them have been  
around for years as a source of amusement for those with/without  
suicidal inclinations, and as a challenge as in "can we really do  
this without killing ourselves in the process?" sort of thing......
