(1) ALERT: 200 caves in danger in Spain.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Description: 4 Feb. 2007.
Hi there!
I'm writing in order to make you know http://www.espeleoteca.com ; it is he
website of the speleo club sited in Almería (S Spain). We have a cataloge of
near 1500 caves in an area of only 12 square kilometres called Sorbas Gypsum
Karst. Although it is an unique karst area in the world, it is in imperiled
risk because of a very bad planned mining based on the obsolete Spanish
Government's 30-yrs old mining law that allows to destroy near 200 caves.
Thank you very much for your attention.
Best regards,

(3) International Journal of Speleology - Call
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description: 2 Feb. 2007.
Dear cave scientist,
the International Journal of Speleology has now started it's journey to get
listed in ISI. This process will lead, hopefully, to the Citation Index and
Impact Factor before we will all meet in Kerrville, USA, at the
International Speleological Congress.
To be able to reach our goal we have to meet three main requirements:
- timeliness of publication
- high quality and diversity (topics, internationality of authorship and
studied areas) of papers
- high citation indexes
Therefore, as Editor-in-Chief of the journal I am asking all potential
authors to consider publication of their high quality papers in the
International Journal of Speleology. All depends on the quality and quantity
of papers that will be submitted to the Journal.
There is no (and never will be) a real deadline for submission of papers,
but in order to get the issues ready in time articles for the next issue
(36(2)) to be printed in June 2007 (online version and sent to subscribers
in July 2007) should arrive within' the end of March 2007.
We remember that high quality is ensured by sending all papers for peer
reviewing to at least two (sometimes 3) independent reviewers, experts in
the field, and peer reviewing, correction of papers, typesetting and paper
proof correction of selected papers takes its time.
If the cave science society wants to count more in the scientific world this
challenge has to be supported in the best possible way.
Best greetings

(5) New great discovery in the Demanova valley! (the Low Tatras Mts.,
Slovakia).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------
Description: 28 Jan. 2007.
The day before yesterday on the 20th january 2007, in a group of eight
cavers, we performed another digging action in the Stefanova-cave (the Low
Tatras Mts., Slovakia). During the last one we stated, there may be two
actions yet and then we shall overcome a narrow part of a passage. In a
secret I hoped in a discovery of 200 m of standard, for the Stefanova-cave
typical passages, at least (a standard profile: 4 x 3 m). After we digged
through on the another side, the assumption turned to be right. We entered
50 m long passage of the Stefanova-cave standard, in which there were two
hopeful sites being blown by a draught. Immediately we dived down for
clearing the sediments out in the both sites in the same time. After
approximately 30 min. already, Palino cried from z first one:
Discoveryyyyyy!!!! Gradually widening the cleared passage all of us move
through it following him into further spaces. After 30 m of creeping we step
into the gigantic room, of dimensions maybe 100 x 40 x 30 m. Here the cave
forks further, the black openings yawn at us from walls and a ceiling. In
the left side of the chamber we descend walking upon the blocks of a
little house dimension down to a stream with a flowage of 30 l per sec. Is
it the Back water stream? Where does the cave verge? Dimensions of another
continuances take our breath away. Passages having been walked are of
gigantic dimensions such ones I do not know nor from the famous Peace cave
belonging to the Demänova cave system being more than 33 km long. Later
we´re considering that a headless running throug the cave is a nonsense and
that´s why we order to return. At 10:30 PM we are out of the cave. Below the
Liberty cave (also belonging to the Demänova cave system) we meet our
colleagues from the home club, who having performed an action in the Mosnica
valley dawdle along the Hell-pub there´s much of yelling and enthusiasm
again. Immediately, we wash ourselves, put an equipment off, some throw
ragged gum overals away and in the Peklo-pub a dewy glass of beer awaits us
already. In the morning I meet Maros in the office we slept nothing the
whole night. Both we ran through new discoveries also in our bedsJ. Now,
just to get rally, heal little scrapes and injuries, and then chop-chop
back to the cave!... + photos. Written by Lubos Holik, photo by Martin
