All Southwest Region Cavers,
For those of you who have not heard, BLM reports that the lake in the Main
Corridor of Ft Stanton is returning. Preliminary reports indicate that the
water level has already risen to about 6-10 inches at Inscription Rock. The
report mentions that the front part of the Main Corridor is wetter but does
not mention any running water. Speculation is that the spring(s) beyond
Inscription Rock are flowing again due to the extended wet surface
conditions that have caused the Rio Bonito to flow continually. Water
temperature in the cave has been around 52-54 degrees in the past and the
usual temperature of the cave is around 58 degrees. So, be prepared for
possible cold and wet caving.
At this point, this development will have minimal effect for those wishing
to see the majority of the cave during the upcoming SWR. The only trips that
currently will be affected are those that continue up the Main Corridor past
20 Steps.
During the upcoming Ft Stanton Expedition, we will measure the water depth
and report any further developments.
