To continue the story, or add part of the beginning to it, the first cave
they visited was Torgac's on Friday, 10/6 and Buzz and Jim Goodbar had
asked me to be the guide so that was cool. We came out after sundown and
headed over to join in with John Corcoran's Fort Stanton Cave Study
Project. So pretty much they were thrust right into NSS and BLM cave
management. That evening everyone came together in the Bunkhouse and the
comradery was just pretty amazing. Not a planned party or anything but the
25 or so cavers present, after having a hearty Dorothy Corcoran/Kathy
Peerman spaghetti dinner, were all just talking about all kinds of caving
things, enjoying Jim Cox's fine homemade beer &c - I think the South
Africans were duly impressed with all the teamwork, discussions and a great
place to do photo downloads, burn CDs and get hot showers. Bright and
early next day they went back to the Don Sawyer-Mud Turtle Dig Site under
the hosting of Steve Peerman, Wayne Walker and John McLean to see what was
about there (almost to Snowy), and then Sam Bono took them south through
Hell Hole and etc. Sunday morning they were off to Roswell, the Alien
Museum and then points south and that's where the Carlsbad article picks it
up. We gave them a lot of management documents of various kinds, such as
cave management plans, environmental assessments, Leave No Trace books; Jim
Goodbar was going to give them Jim and Val Werker's new book on cave
restoration. So they are definitely getting loaded down with American
styles of cave management. Of interest, here's Neil Norquoy's website:

CARLSBAD — Words such as "awesome, fantastic, excellent and beyond our
wildest dreams" come spilling out from three South African cavers as
they prepared to descend into Parker Ranch Cave, located south of
White's City.
