Here is the text of my letter to the Parks Superintendent; It was emailed a few days ago. He responded that it would be made part of the record and thanked me for my input. I don't think it counts as a VOTE though.
Dear Sir,
The NPS was created to watch over and protect our National Parks. And the National Parks were created to be protected and for "all" to enjoy. The NPS was not created to become an additional taxing entity of our government. If the NPS can not function on the funding from the Federal Government, it should decrease it's overhead and infrastructure to match it's budget. Any additional infrastructure will require addition maintenance funds in the future, thus requiring additional tax hikes (entry fees) in the future. Leave it wild. Don't pave it over.
By taxing our entry into our own public lands, you remove the "all" portion of the founding documents of the parks. There is not one activity that is taxed that shows an increase in use after the tax is imposed. On the contrary, taxes have always decreased the activity on which they are imposed. Our children do not have incomes to spend on these kinds of entry fees. But $10.00 will buy a lot of spray paint! I hope you get my point.
Since we don't get to vote on this tax increase, I request that my letter be made part of the record and distributed to all who will have a part in this decision.
Sincerely,
William C. Ellis
